Virginia state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi has won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. Hashmi is the first Muslim woman in the Virginia Senate and could become the first to hold the state’s second-highest office.

Virginia Democratic state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi won a six-way primary on Wednesday to become the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor, the end to a two-day contest in which Hashmi narrowly defeated her top competitor by less than 1%.

Ghazala Hashmi has become the first Muslim nominee for statewide office in Virginia’s history, winning the Democratic primary election for lieutenant governor on Tuesday night.
