According to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, around 412,000 undocumented immigrants resided in the city as of 2022. Approximately 229,000 migrants arrived in the city beginning in that year, though fewer than 51,000 still reside in city-supported shelter.

The President is recasting migration as a form of “invasion,” broadening his already expansive powers and making anyone in the U.S. who’s undocumented a potential target.

The Senate has confirmed Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary, putting the South Dakota governor in charge of a sprawling agency that is essential to national security and President Donald Trump’s plans to clamp down on illegal immigration.

Noem will now lead a federal department tasked with enforcing Trump’s hardline immigration policies, despite her lack of experience with homeland security issues.
