Competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics begins on Wednesday. The opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Games takes place on Friday, but before the Olympic torch is lit, competition in curling and hockey gets underway. The next two weeks will be filled with incredible Olympic moments from the ice to the snow to the slopes.

After first being moved to Monday, NASCAR's Clash was pushed further to Wednesday due to historic snowfall across North Carolina.

Here's a look at how a winter storm impacted the Wilmington area on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026.

On Sunday at 1:39 p.m. the NWS Blacksburg VA released a winter weather advisory valid from 5 p.m. until Monday 10 a.m. The advisory is for Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

The winter storm has moved out, but the result is dangerous roads, closed churches and extremely cold temperatures.

Local reports said the pileup involved as many as 100 vehicles and it wasn't immediately known how many injuries there were. The collision occurred in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Kannapolis, North Carolina, where at least 14.5 inches of snow have fallen Saturday during Winter Storm Gianna.

Snowfall is picking up across the state. The Triangle is expecting to get up to three inches of snow through Sunday.
