Mayor Todd Gloria announced $5.3 million in budget cuts and an immediate elimination of 31 city hall executive positions during a Tuesday conference to address San Diego’s $252.2 million deficit.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has announced plans to consolidate several city departments and eliminate vacant positions in order to save $5.3 million annually and close a $258 million budget deficit within the next four months.

Mayor Todd Gloria announced a series of budget cuts Tuesday "designed to generate cost savings and minimize service-level reductions," according to his office. Gloria said 31 city jobs were eliminated, including that of Chief Operating Officer Eric Dargan. Twenty-six of the eliminated jobs were vacant, five were not.

Gloria’s announcement comes as the city faces a significant budget deficit “following the narrow failure of Measure E — and after months of careful review and consideration of potential reductions and consolidations,

Todd Gloria said he paid his own way to Manila and back, but his office acknowledged that two members of the mayor’s security detail joined the delegation.

The city will possibly increase revenue as much as $100 million from parking changes and single-family home trash pickup, but still faces a large deficit for the 2025/2026 budget year
