Federal law enforcement and ICE agents have arrested nearly 600 undocumented migrants wanted for outstanding crimes in sanctuary cities, including some from New York.

Border czar Tom Homan told NBC News that several people with criminal convictions were apprehended in Chicago.

According to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, around 412,000 undocumented immigrants resided in the city as of 2022. Approximately 229,000 migrants arrived in the city beginning in that year, though fewer than 51,000 still reside in city-supported shelter.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents appear to have stepped up their detention of unauthorized immigrants, taking more than 500 people into custody on Thursday, almost twice the average number of daily arrests late last year.
