Beam died earlier Friday after a shooting on the Laney campus, where he was athletic director. A suspect, 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr., is reportedly in custody and the authorities have described the attack as targeted, with the suspect and victim apparently knowing each other.

A suspect was arrested in connection to the shooting of “Last Chance U” athletic director and retired football coach John Beam, the Oakland Police Department said Friday. Beam was in critical condition Thursday night following the shooting at the Laney College Fieldhouse, the Peralta Community College District said.
