Doctors on Friday said the 88-year-old Francis is "not out of danger" ​and that the main threat facing him would be the onset of sepsis.

The pope's infection will require further hospitalization, the Vatican said Monday, as concerns grew about the increasingly frail 88-year-old pontiff.

Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital in a “fair” condition on Friday after a weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors confirmed a respiratory tract infection and prescribed “absolute rest” alongside unspecified drug therapies. Subsequent updates said his slight fever had gone away and that he was in “stable” condition.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said Thursday that the pope now has focal pneumonia with limited areas of infection in the lungs. Bruni said Francis is breathing on his own, and his heart is stable.
