The Google-backed autonomous vehicle company made the announcement Wednesday. Freeway service will debut first in the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Waymo previously began testing freeway driving under human supervision in Phoenix in early 2024.
This week’s announcement comes after nearly a year of test rides on freeways in the region with Waymo employees.
The Alphabet company’s self-driving cars are opening up shop in more and more cities. Now—finally—they’re taking to the freeway.
In 2026, Waymo, in partnership with Lyft, will begin transporting passengers autonomously through Nashville's streets. Nashville will mark the company’s sixth city, along with San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and Austin.
