An arrest had been made in connection with the Thursday shooting of Laney College athletic director and former football coach John Beam, the Oakland Police Department announced Friday.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — College football coach John Beam, who was featured in the Netflix series “Last Chance U”, has died after being shot on campus, the Oakland Police Department said Friday, and a suspect has been arrested.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee called the situation "devastating,” noting it was the second shooting on an Oakland campus in a week.

A senior member of the athletics staff at a community college in Oakland has been shot on campus. Police are investigating Thursday's shooting at Laney College.

Laney College athletic director and former football coach John Beam died Friday after being shot on the California campus the previous night. The shooting suspect was identified as Cedric Irving Jr.,

A celebrated football coach known for his grit and hard-charging personality, John Beam gained national fame in the 2020 Netflix documentary “Last Chance U.”

The arrest, which happened at about 3 a.m. at the San Leandro BART station, caps an intense manhunt for the suspected shooter.

One student was shot at Oakland's Skyline High School, an official confirmed with ABC7. Police said two suspects are in custody.
