This is called the “head-lag test”. Professionals use it to see whether a baby is strong enough to hold their head and whether development is on track. Your health nurse therefore does it as a routine part of her visits. To do the test, you gently pull your baby up by the arms from lying on their back and watch whether the deep neck muscles are strong enough to lift the head with the body. Newborn (0–4 weeks): Pronounced head lag is completely normal, the head clearly falls back. Around 6 weeks:

This video shows what is called a “head lag” - it’s when the baby is not yet strong enough (particularly at the front of the neck) to hold the head when lifted straight up 👶🏼 You can see that the head is “lagging” behind with this gentle lift… This is totally normal until week 12 when we expect to see more activation of the muscles at the front of the neck 👶🏼 If we see babies in clinic with head-lag at 12-14 weeks we give these exercises (and others….) to strengthen head control 🥰 Babies ge

The head lag test is an important tool that healthcare providers use to assess whether a baby is developing within the normal range. By 4 months of age, most babies can hold their head steady when slowly pulled up from a supine position. This is due to the activation of the baby’s ‘head righting reflex,’ which engages the deep neck flexors to help stabilize the head in a chin-tucked position. However, the head lag test should only be used for assessment purposes, as it is not intended to functio
