Native sheep, and their wool and meat, provided a rich mix of stories and activities for the opening days of this year's festival. A gathering from several islands around the north had been organised by Helga Scott for the North Ronaldsay Trust to highlight the new developments on the island with the native seaweed-eating sheep, and there were opportunities to hear more about the way in which traditional breeds of sheep are helping to sustain local economies. An afternoon at the Old Library in K

Orkney Boreray sheep breeder Jane Cooper is funding her own abattoir to improve welfare for her rare breed sheep and avoid driving them all the way to Dingwall. Jane explains how the Tiny Trailer Abattoir will work when it arrives on her farm next Spring. It will also travel to North Ronaldsay so native sheep there don’t have to leave the island for slaughter.
