Tapa-making was once practiced throughout French Polynesia and life in the five archipelagos was set to the sound of the i'e or beater. Now, this traditional craft has largely disappeared. In this video, French Polynesian knowlege holder, Ena Manuireva, describes the history of the i'e and explains how seers predicted the demise of tapa-cloth creation. "The most telling artefacts that epitomized the impact of the western world on our traditional community, were the ‘ie (beaters) and the tapa (tr
