A long ship is an ingenious construction, where nothing is incidental. The animation demonstrates the construction of the Sea Stallion from Glendalough, a reconstruction of the almost 30-metre-long Viking warship, Skuldelev 2. The reconstruction was built in full scale at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark where both the original 1000 year old ship and the sailing reconstruction can be seen. [DK] Et langskib er en yderst sindrig konstruktion, hvor intet er tilfældigt. Animationen viser

A unique boat-find has been added to the Viking Ship Museum's archaeological collection. On the 23rd March, the ca 3,000 year old Bronze Age boat from Varpelev was transported from the National Museum's Conservation Unit to the Viking Ship Museum. It took many hands to carry the boat into the Museum. It's now lying securely in its case in the Viking Ship Hall and is not yet on exhibition. The boat's form has to be reconstructed first, after which the process of displaying and communicating the b

Here it is: a short film from Gisle’s launch and the maiden voyage on Saturday. From the big smiles on the boatbuilders faces, you can see that they’re happy with the way the boat turned out. Today, they’ve had several rowing trips on the fjord, getting to know Gisle and figuring out what rowing and sailing trials they want to carry out. (The speeches are in Danish only, but you can skip forward to two minutes in to get to the action) Read more about the building process here: http://www.vikinge

[Dansk tekst nedenfor] Enjoy this little film about what UNESCO's recognition of the Nordic clinker-built boat means. UNESCO inscribed in 2021 the Nordic clinker boat traditions on the list of intangible heritage of humanity. The clinker-built boats of the North – and the traditions associated with them – have now been officially acknowledged by UNESCO as living cultural heritage, which must be safeguarded and preserved for future generations. The Viking ship is part of this tradition and on May

Skuldelev 5 update: The boatbuilders are getting ready to split the last of the three pine logs that will be used for making planks for our new reconstruction of the 11th century warship, Skuldelev 5. Here, you can see Oscar and Hanus hewing an incision into the side of the 13.7 m long pine. There is a matching incision directly opposite on the other side of the log. It is along these incisions that the log will be split in half. Wooden wedges will be driven into the incision, forcing the fibres

EN: The Gislinge Boat for Spejdernes Lejr is close to completion and the scouts can begin looking forward to taking up tools and working alongside the boatbuilders to get boat ready to launch in the lake in Hedeland during the Jamboree. In this film from the construction of another Gislinge Boat back in 2016, you can see how the boatbuilders cleave the oak for making the planks. EN: While many people might associate Viking Age axes with combat, the axe was actually one of the important and versatile tools used when building Viking ships. Following on from our cleaving film last week, this film from the construction of the Gislinge Boat in 2016 shows some of the more common axe types we use at the boatyard. All of the tools used are reconstructions of archaeological finds and the selection here gives you a sense of just how specialised Viking Age axes were. From large an

Rul ned for dansk The Sea Stallion from Glendalough is a reconstruction of the 30 metre-long Irish warship, Skuldelev 2. It is a bold design, both heavy and strong enough to carry its 112 m² sail, but also sufficiently light and long to be rowed by a crew of 60 men. A compromise between strength and lightness. The Mast and the Sail Knowledge of 'The Sea Stallion from Glendalough': [Dansk tekst nedenfor] The sail that HAVHINGSTEN sailed to Ireland and back again with is 112 m2 - that is as big as a medium-sized bungalow. It is made of flax and carried on a yard that is hauled up in the centrally placed mast. All Viking ships were rigged in this way – just like all other Northern European sailing ships right down to about 1400. Even in the twentieth century such single square sails were employed, for ex

A rum consists of the distance between two frames. In each rum there was normally space for two men, who at the same time were responsible for operating an oar on either side of the ship. The rum formed a framework around a considerable part of the life of the crew during a voyage. It was here they worked, here they slept and if the ship

[Dansk version under den engelske] Planks used to make Viking ships were incredibly flexible. In this video of a jauntily bouncy plank, you can see exactly what we mean. When building on the new full scale replica of the Viking Age warship Skuldelev 5 one of the most commonly asked questions we get is: ‘Why didn’t the Vikings use saws when making planks?’ We especially get this question a lot when laboriously cleaving large oak logs. The short answer is that while small handsaws have been found

When we sail a new reconstruction for the first time, we have to rediscover a technique more than 1,000 years old. No modern human beings possess the same basis of experience that the Vikings had, neither on land nor at sea. But the boatbuilder's sense of materials, form and aesthet

Gislinge project update: One of the key elements of the Gislinge Boat Project was the production of a linen sail for Gislinge III. Several of the Museum’s other vessels have sails of wool but this is the first time we have experimented with hand-woven linen sailcloth. Measuring 10m squared, the sail is made from five panels which were then sewn together. In this film, the Museum’s weaver, Anna Nørgaard, explains the processes involved in producing a sail using flax, from the initial harvesting a

Knowledge of The Sea Stallion from Glendalough: Strong and flexible back bone The keel is the backbone of the longship. It has to be strong so that it can withstand stresses and strains at sea and when the ship is run up onto the beach. It also has to be flexible, however, so that it is not broken up by the movements of the ship in the waves. The Vikings called the longships 'serpents' – perhaps because it felt as though they twisted their way through the water. The SEA STALLION’s keel is more t
