Today’s video gives an up close look at a beaver furiously eating leaves off of a large branch. I love watching their little front paws/feet handle their food. They are very dextrous and handl-like. #wildlifephotography #beavers #beaver | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

Beavers generally eat product from deciduous trees, and usually will only eat coniferous tree products if there is a shortage of preferable food. But about once a year I see a beaver eating needles from a coniferous tree even when there seems to be lots of their regular foods to choose from. I have heard people speculate that they might do this for medicinal benefits, or for some type of vitamins or other nutritional needs that they are lacking in their diet. It’s also possible that it is simply

On first glance, it might look like the beaver is eating the bark off this fallen cottonwood. But they don’t eat this old, dry bark. The beaver is eating the cambium layer, which is the thin layer of new wood just under the bark. In fact, you can see the beaver pick the bark off of the strip of cambium before eating it. The cambium is the active layer of wood that grew this season. Basically, it is this year’s ring added to the tree; the growing part of the tree trunk. It is often called the inn

TGIB! Thank God It’s Beaver! I was asked for a close-up video of a beaver chewing a tree. This is about as close-up to a wild beaver chewing you can hope for. At times in the video you can see the lower incisors carve through the wood. Remarkably, a beaver’s bite strength isn’t off the charts. A beaver can bite at 180 psi … more than a human (88psi), but less even than a typical dog (300 psi). They can do this because their lower incisors are incredibly sharp. EDIT: (Since many are asking) Beave

Beaver is nutritious, delicious, and readily abundant, but it also tastes the closest to beef in comparison to other wild meats. It’s much more lean but the texture and flavor most closely resemble that of a beef cow. Beavers are highly abundant and yield a surprising amount of meat, so if you’re interested in adding another wild harvested food to your freezer, consider pursuing the flat tail. Make sure to research legal forms of take and season dates in your respective state before setting out!
