76 years ago, the USS Laffey (DD-724) became "The Ship That Would Not Die" when she survived the longest kamikaze attack on a single vessel. The American flag that flew on board that day is still intact and a part of our museum collection. Take a closer look in today's Curator's Corner. | Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

American Ship USS Laffey (DD 724) Japanese Couldn’t Sink Discover the incredible true story of USS Laffey DD-724, the American destroyer that survived the most intense kamikaze attack in World War II history. On April 16, 1945, off Okinawa, this Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer faced 22 Japanese aircraft in just 80 minutes, suffering 6 kamikaze crashes and 4 bomb hits, yet refused to sink. Commander Frederick Julian Becton and his crew of 336 men demonstrated extraordinary courage as they fought

On this day in 1975, the USS Laffey decommissioned for the second and final time. She was previously decommissioned in 1944 and recommissioned in 1951 to serve in the Korean War. The decommissioning ceremony took place at the Franklin Street Pier in Alexandria, Virginia. Six years later, in 1981, the USS Laffey became part of the fleet at Patriots Point. We are so thankful that she remains a vibrant part of our museum today! | Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

🚢 The Ship That Would Not Die — in Unbelievable Detail! As we prepare to launch our new USS Laffey exhibit this week and mark the 80th anniversary of the attack at Okinawa, we’re shining a light on the incredible behind-the-scenes work that brought this powerful story to life—right down to the tiniest detail. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our friend and WWII veteran Ari Phoutrides. Phoutrides served aboard the USS Laffey from 1943 to 1946; he was a plankowner. His combat experiences on the destroyer —both at Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy and Okinawa—were formative. During the battle of Okinawa, the Laffey withstood the most unrelenting kamikaze air attacks in history and earned the nickname "The Ship that Would Not Die." He knew first hand the sacrifices others

Today, National Flag Day honors Old Glory and commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. The holiday is a day that Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents. Representing independence and unity, the Star-Spangled Banner has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and the flag is flown proudly. This special moment was caught on camera: The raising of the colors aboard the USS Laffey by a sailor from the Navy's Nuclear Power Training Unit. | Patriot
