The northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is the world’s largest burrowing marsupial, but also one of Australia’s rarest mammals due to land-clearing, competition with livestock and rabbits, and threats from dingoes and wild dogs. Thankfully, the Australian Geographic Society is partnering with Australian Wildlife Conservancy to give these animals a second chance after their numbers declined to just 35 individuals.
