Oleksa and her daughter Eipril fled their home city of Kharkiv in April 2022, leaving behind everything – their flat, their friends, community and even their beloved cat Nisa. Eipril, who was just nine-years-old at the time packed her favourite toys, which she then shared with the other children on the long train journey – recalling this moment still gives Oleksa goosebumps and she says is testament to her daughter's thoughtful nature.
