#OnThisDay in 2001, Gander, Newfoundland opened its doors to 38 airplanes & 6700 passengers who diverted to Gander International Airport following the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. When the United States shut down its airspace in response to the attacks, there were still hundreds of international flights crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Too far along to turn back, and with many of their destinations now closed to them, the planes were ordered to land
