The Temple Bar Gateway is the only surviving gateway into the old City of London. Dating from 1671, it once straddled the roadway where Fleet Street becomes the Strand, at the Western edge of the jurisdiction of the City. It was removed in 1878 and spent time at Theobald’s Park in Hertfordshire after it was acquired by an aristocrat called Sir Henry Meux.
