Angelo Bruno was the longtime boss of the Philadelphia crime family, known as “The Gentle Don” because he preferred quiet business deals over open violence. He led the family from 1959 until March 21, 1980, when he was shot in the head with a shotgun while sitting in his car outside his home in Philadelphia. He died instantly. His murder was believed to be an inside job, and it sparked a violent power struggle within the Philadelphia mob.
